Who encouraged or inspired you to write?

My favorite uncle was the first person I remember encouraging me to write. I’d add some little note to the pictures I’d draw for him and tuck in with my mother’s letters. He said the pictures were okay, but he really loved the notes. In the early grades I wrote little stories that I’d read during Show & Tell—Mama wouldn’t let me take stuff to “show off” because “it might make the other children feel bad”—and I got props from teachers and kids both. I was on a roll. By junior high I was filling spiral notebooks with girlish tales to be shared with close friends, one of whom told me years later she knew I’d become a writer. (So embarrassing! I hadn’t seen Donna since we were kids, and I’d forgotten she was one of my early readers.) But all along the way there were school teachers encouraging me to write. I’ve always loved school, loved teaching, and teachers will always be my heroes.
